Basic Security System – Here’s the Essential Parts

Your basic security needs list.

It doesn't cost a lot to have a basic security system in your home to protect you and your family from thieves. And in many cases the basic system is more than enough reasonable security.

A lot of people over look the fact that your homeowner’s insurance may give you a break, and in some cases a big break, if you have a home security system.

And if your insurance company does not give discounts for having an alarm system, then maybe it’s time to shop your home insurance around.

If you've new to our website and haven’t looked around much, then you may not know we believe in keeping things simple. We like wireless devices and self installation.

We also recommend buying the components of your security system from one store or company. Compatibility is very important with security systems.

Basic Security System Essentials

There are 4 key parts of every basic security system:

  •   Outdoor lighting - the biggest deterrent is a big, bright halogen light that catches any intruders into your property in its glare. This can be set on a timer or more commonly on motion sensors. Make sure that if you choose the motion option that it doesn't get triggered by small wildlife as you'll spend a fortune in electricity bills.
  •   Sensors - these will trigger alarms and warnings if any movable or breakable part of your home is damaged. They typically fit on the back of all external doors and will be activated if the link is broken by the door opening. More complex security systems will also have movement sensors attached to each window and will ring out if undue force is being used against the glass.
You will need some alarms with your basic security system.
  •      Alarms - these are the bedrock of all security systems. They should be triggered by a range of different events and should be loud enough to disturb the neighbors. Look out for companies offering systems where you can download an app that will sound the alarm when you're away from home.
  •         Cameras - your budget will dictate the quality and number of cameras that you'll be able to afford. At the very minimum, you'll want to cover the front and back of the house, especially key entry points. Whether you then place cameras in each room is a matter of personal choice but it will increase the number of opportunities to get a recognizable picture.

Some security firms will offer a basic security system package coupled with a security guard service that will respond to any alarms and unexpected events. This can give you greater piece of mind but of course will cost extra even if you've bought the minimum equipment.

For a cheaper alternative, you can buy security software that will gather together all the footage and data from your alarms and sensors and allows you to monitor it yourself.

Basic Security System Monitoring

Basic security monitoring

Security / alarm companies offer 24 hour monitoring systems that will alert the authorities if you have a break-in. The normal routine is for the company to first call your house or a cell phone and see if the alarm was setoff accidently.

If you do not answer, or if whoever answers does not give the correct password, then the call to authorities is placed and the police will send a car to your house.
