GPS Car locator is a device which helps the owner to find the car from the car thieves. GPS (Global Positioning System)

Global Positioning System (GPS) is system, accommodates perfect positioning and navigation at any season, no matter of day and night. It can be used by anyone, from any where in the earth. The main media between these receivers and the transmitters is satellite, which acts as an intermediator between these receivers and transmitters. For these purpose US had launched 24 satellites, each satellite revolves twice a day around the earth. In 1983, the Department of defense of US developed these satellites for the military purpose.

Working of GPS car locator

Each satellite is programmed to send the signals parallel in as same as the remaining satellites. The signal contains some digital information like position, locations and precise information, transmission time. As long as the car's satellite GPS receiver has a clear view of the sky and not blocked by any solid objects such as buildings or mountains, it is able to receive these satellite transmissions. As the receiver in the car receives the satellite signal, probably there should be a time difference between transmission time and the receiving time. This delay will be automatically calculated distance between the car and the satellite by a simple formula (Distance = Speed X Time). Hence the constant speed of the transmission, which makes calculations very simple.

Distance Calculation with the help of Satellite

The Calculation of distance is very easy, if there is only one satellite. But there are 24 satellites because a satellite couldn’t cover the whole earth. Now, the process of trilateration will come to act to deal with 24 satellites. In this process, three satellites discuss between each other and calculate the longitudes and latitude coordinates to give the two dimensional fix, as the number of satellites increased, possibly accuracy of fix will increase.

As the user doesn’t understand this coordination, and also doesn’t understand the navigation highways and roads, the GPS unit includes mapping software. Just like paper map, this map includes detailed information of the roadways and features of a given area. Map companies such as TeleAtlas and Navteq are instantly updates their digital maps to provide the most accurate mapping. With these map data, the car GPS unit is able to overlay the cars location onto the map and provides the turn-by-turn directions using which a GPS user can easily read the map to find his car.

In addition to location and directions, car GPS offers a variety of other helpful features, including updated traffic information and information on nearby businesses such as gas stations and restaurants. Other non-navigational features such as music player may also be included on certain GPS navigation systems. In these, the GPS will be built into the music player or placed near the music player or in a secret location, where one cannot get an easy access to it.
