DIY Home Security Basics

Every customer looks simple, very effective and cheaper products in any field of application. If a burglars feels there is a good chance of caught, he usually move on to the next house. The most important concept of DIY home security system is to create a difficult atmosphere to the thieves, so that they can’t enter the house. Home security system usually consists of a motion detector to detect the burglar movement, and a control panel to control, and a siren to alert.

Commonly used DIY Home Security Systems

The most common used DIY Home security Systems, are

  • 1. Passive infrared detectors (PIR Detectors), and
  • 2. Ultra sonic detectors.
  • Passive infrared detectors (PIR) are most commonly used alarm technique in house, because of its affordable and reliable functionality. The term passive means it doesn’t need to generate and it use its own energy. This sensor grabs the infrared energy emitted by an intruder's body heat. When an intruder walks in front of view of the detector, the sensor detects a sharp increase in infrared energy. Of course, there will always be gradual variation of heat energy in an area, so PIR detectors are intended to trigger the alarm only when infrared energy levels change very rapidly.

Ultrasonic detectors: These active detector (unlike Passive Infrared detectors), transmits an ultrasonic sound waves that are muted (does not hurts the human ear). Doppler shift is used as the principle to under go this operation; in this technique 25 kHz and 75 kHz ultrasonic frequencies are used, the change in frequency due to burglar motion is detected. Two type of possibilities must occur, when the Doppler shift method to be successful.

When an ultrasonic reflector emits the ultrasonic waves, to the hard surface, it will reflect back with the constant frequency. When the burglar comes in front of the detector, as his body is a soft object, it absorbs the waves and reflects the weak wave to the detector. This is known as Doppler shift method. Thus the alarm starts alerting the user.

Preparing your own Do-it-yourself home security systems (DIY)

These systems can be made by anyone, they doesn’t need any degree, or any qualifications.

  • First of all you need some knowledge about the home security systems, about its functioning.
  • Then you should prepare a strategy (plan) of system which you need. Better plot the plan on the paper.
  • Buy the spares from the shop or else get them from the unused old Electronic widgets using which you can prepare your own system.
  • Build the system according to your plotted plan,
  • Test the System, whether it works according to your plan or not.
